Crochet Easy Dog Sweater!

Glad your here… as it’s cold outside and our dog, a cairn terrier mix we liberated a year ago from an animal shelter, is smallish and gets cold easy. I developed an easy dog sweater that is warm, easy on and off and washable. This pattern is adaptable to any size dog as long as you measure. Three measurements are needed. Around the neck, from head to beginning of tail and around the chest or belly (which ever is larger)

Our dog Buddy is the model today so it looks real big on him.

I’m making this for a friends dog and his measurements are 16 inches around the neck, 20 inches from neck to tail, and 25 inches around the chest/ belly area.

For this sweater I am using Bernat royal blue and Red Heart white.

A size 5.5 crochet hook but use what the yarn recommends.

A button or 2 I use one that can be sewed in with yarn. Easy and looks great! They are 1.1/4 inches and are easy to sew in with yarn.  As it’s a larger dog I am doing 2 buttons.

Scissors and yarn needle

Stitches DC- double crochet (you can use any stitch you like but I used DC because then I don’t have to leave a space for the button-hole. It’s there for you.

For the sweater I chained 50 and did DC in  the 4th chain from the hook. DC to the end chain 3 turn and work your way. That’s it… yes that’s it. Well for the first part anyway.

Now I’m doing a stripped pattern so I alternated the blue and white every 2 rows. You decide if you want solid or stripped or multi-colored. I did 2 rows of blue and 2 rows of white. But again the beauty part of this easy dog sweater is you design it.

I am also, doing back loop only. After your first DC row start using the back loop only as you work the length.  It gives the sweater a great pattern design.

I also did a turtleneck so I did a few more rows so it can fold over.

After you have the length sew 3-6 inches together so it goes around your dog’s neck.

Then on one side of the sweater start don’t my D.C. Leaving an area for the front legs and back-end.

D.C. The width you need for your dog. And just eyeball the perfect position for the button or buttons.

Attach the button on the short piece b cause then you can button your pup in for the best fit.

Buddy is not happy with me because I woke him up.

See easy as can be. Just pick your color or colors and get the measurements. I add 1 inch to the numbers because the last thing your pet wants is a tight-fitting sweater.

To wash this fabulous easy sweater just wash in cold water and lay flat to dry.

Crochet the Easiest Shawl!

Glad your here crochet lovers! As I was shopping for my Christmas gifts and such, I noticed there were a ton of shawls made from all materials and styles. As someone who is not a fashionista in any way shape or form I thought…”HEY guess their in style again..” I know real observant….

I made a few shawls for my craft fair adventures in November and December and they sold out. Complete shock to me because I tend to make what I like and what I have fun making for these things… Trends are not a part of my booth plan.

I want to share with you the easiest shawl I make. You can use your own yarn choices and color schemes of course.

For this shawl I used Carron Cakes. I must say this yarn is perfect for a shawl or even blanket. The color combination and transition are excellent!

Crochets Easiest Shawl:

You will need:

Carron Cake yarn at least 2 balls, or the yarn of your choice.

Crochet hook that works best with your yarn choice.

Scissors always a must

Yarn needle to sew in ends if you need too

Stitches I use are magic ring, DC – double crochet, and chain

Not hard at all…

Start with a magic ring inside the ring crochet 1 DC, chain 1, 3 DC, chain 1, and 1 more DC. total 5 DC. You will have 1 set of 3 DC.

Row 2 Chain 4, turn your work and in the first hole crochet 3 DC, chain 1, and 3 DC in next hole, chain 1, 1 DC. total 2 sets of 3 DC.

Row 3 repeat the chain 4 at each end of the rows adding 1 set of 3 DC at each end.

You will be doing this pattern till you reach the width you want. It’s a big triangle. With the cake yarn 1 ball will make a child size but I do 2 balls for teen and adult size.

After you have the desired width of your shawl you can stop there and weave in ends… but if you want a little splash on your shawl add fringe… you can make them as long or short as you like. For this you just cut the length you want but remember it’s going to be doubled over. I used a huge hook to attach it. Easy huh?  Look at that transition…. FABULOUS!!

See how easy it is… I even did this shawl while watching TV. Because it takes me a few days to complete this project I only did a sample of the process so I can get this out there for you. I’ll finish it and it will be posted on my Etsy site soon.
Let me know if you like this shawl and if you make one… comment below! And don’t forget to follow me for more easy crochet projects.

Thrift Store Finds!

Glad your here!

So we just had a few storms come through Northern California. Today was a beautiful day so my hubby stayed home today to help do some storm repairs. We had a window that liked to turn itself in to a waterfall and a gutter that was not completely cleaned out.

After we did out work of course….. We spend the afternoon going to the 2 thrift stores here in our town. My daughter looks for clothes, hubby movies, and me book, clothes and chicken stuff. My son just went along to laugh at us I think…

I didn’t buy it because I have no place to put it but they had a John F Kennedy tapestry. 1965 from Italy. Cool in my humble opinion. Maybe I should  go back tomorrow.. $20 bucks what do you think?

Love hunting books at thrift stores. They are not new releases but I almost always find an interesting one. This is a great place to find old cook books one of my favorite types and even do it yourself books.

I did get the Elizabeth Taylor book. For $3 it was a deal….. I love biographies on the stars who from the golden age of movies..

I DID NOT get the David Hasselhoff book…… I loved Knight Rider when I had a HUGE crush on him…  and I did watch Baywatch but……..I was cracking up in the book isle….

You have to hunt for good quality clothing at thrift stores but its worth it. Here is my daughter hiding in the racks… We found 2 shirts for .50 cents each and a sweatshirt for $2. Here is a tip…. ALWAYS wash the items before you wear them…. ICK!!!

SCORE!!!!! Found this handmade chicken purse for $8 brand new. Yes I will be using it too. It’s how I torment the family…. I’m cool like that….

Found a few movies too. We tend to watch movies and binge watch TV shows we like. Hubby is addicted to DVD’s but I found the Oceans Eleven set and the Audrey Hepburn set… I love old movies where you had to have real talent to become a star….. These were a bit more than we normally pay at $6 each but hey we were having a bit of fun…

So money-saving tip of the week… Take time to check out your local thrift stores. The 2 we have here are independent ones. One called Field Haven is a rescue organization for cats. We frequently donate to them. The other has been here forever and is privately owned. The prices are a little high for a thrift store but I do find deals when I hunt. Do some good and donate to those that help the community by donating items and purchasing that hard to find item.

Glad you are here!

Chicken Raising! Basic Needs…

As you can see I am a chicken Mom… Love chickens. They always de-stress me and I get eggs.  I wanted to share some of my information I learned by keeping chickens. I hope you are thinking about getting some. They are fun to have and help you in lots of ways.

Gardens love chickens….. The pecking and scratching as well as the poop add nutrients and aerates the soil. Rich soil is a plus in gardening as you know.

So I also save money by keeping chickens. A dozen eggs at our Wal-Mart is 3.38. That is for large white eggs. I pay for a 40 lb bag of feed at $9 feeding 10 chickens all hens for about a month. I get about 8 eggs a day in peak time which I will explain in a minute making my out-of-pocket cash cost per dozen eggs about $2 bucks….  cost-effective right….

Not to mention my eggs are completely natural. No chemicals added and have more nutrients per egg then store-bought.. Plus, you can’t beat an egg cooked within 24 hours of collection.

The eggs in the store are not from healthy chickens. They are giving chemicals to make them lay more often than the 28 hour natural cycle. Some breeds are longer or shorter cycle. They are already old by the time they hit the stores, egg producers have 6 WEEKS to get them to the store….. Depending on what breed you choose to have your fresh eggs will be bigger too.

A few things you need to do to prep for having chickens……

1; Check your city or county and find out if you can have chickens and how many… If not well it’s completely up to you to decide if you want to risk it.

2; OK you can have chickens so now do you have space for them. They need a minimum of 4 square feet per for roaming around. That will dictate how many you can get too. Remember their lay cycles are 28 hours. You may be giving eggs away if you go over board. YES I DID…..

3; Most chicken experts recommend at least 3 chickens because they are social animals. You also need to be aware of outdoor predators like cats, dogs, hawks…. etc. Keep your other animals away from them unless you are willing to deal with the ugly details. Or train your pets to love them too.

4; You do not need a rooster to have chickens lay eggs. That is a question I have gotten before. If you have people close by you may want to keep it to hens.

5;You need a house for them. A place for them to lay eggs and perch at night. It will help you in the long run by having a way to contain them on occasion like I do. We purchase a hen-house from someone on Craigslist. $100 and 2 dog runs for $100. not too much money if you think about it. You can build your own hen house and get fencing.

6; Water and feed are important. You don’t have to spend huge money on chicken products but find out what will work for you and check out YouTube for ideas. Unless you live on 20 acres and have plenty of green and bugs for them they will need supplemental feed. Fresh water needs to be available 24-7. Feed you can feed them in the morning and a bit at night but I just have feed available 24-7 too.

7; Now is the time to research what breeds are best for you. If you live in snow country or hot area certain breeds are best for your area. Here in Northern Cal I can choose almost any breed. Contact your local farm supply store and find out what works around your area. Most of them will be selling day old chicks in the spring.

8; Make sure your area you have for the chickens has ample shade and sun. Chickens need at least 10 hours of sun to lay eggs and be healthy. Shade for when its hot out is good too. They can’t sweat and have hot feathers. They need an area to cool off. I set up a mister so they can be cooler when it’s over 100 degrees.

There you go…. the 8 things you should think about before you bring those fur balls home. I hope this helps you with the basic information you will need to know before you get any chicks or chickens.

In my next Chicken Raising article I will take you though the frist steps of chick babies. What they need and how to raise them so they love you as much as you love them.

Questions or comments please leave them here… I want to help you and you can help others…

Glad your here!

Pokémon Go Family Fun!

Hello… My name is Lisa and I play Pokemon Go……. Yes I do….. Really….. Why would I lie about that?????

OK so my family plays the game. Even me and my 62-year-old hubby… Although, he can only play during the weekends and holidays.

My kids who are both in college were talking about it and bragging about what Pokemon they got. I was curious so I asked them to load it and show me. Well… I am addicted to this game. I only play about an hour a day or so mainly when I am out doing errands and such.  If you want to get your kids off the computer and help you… announce your going shopping at 7am and watch them get up and be ready in 20 mins..

I would say we are rural players because our city as of now have under 30 stops and maybe 10 gyms but they are in a 10 mile radius.Below is my nearby list and the 1 stop is 2 miles away from us.

Because of my knee issues we devised a system so we can all play. I can’t walk 5-10 KM to get my Pokemon so I drive while, my daughter who is fabulous at doing 2 games at 1 time plays the game and my son who is great at navigation directs us to the best pokemon. The beauty of living in a small city is that I can find streets without much traffic. Driving under 6 miles an hour just makes us look like caseing the town…. Pick a straight route and drive real slow…… Stop every few blocks and let readings catch up. By stopping every few blocks it will track your KM better in our findings.

Disclaimer: DO NOT drive and play. Have a pal and let them play while you drive. But be willing to pull over and let others pass you. DO NOT go on to anyone’s property. Public locations only. AND if you walk while playing stay in public areas and watch where you are. We don’t want to lose you…

We have 1 nest and most of the time its pidgey or rat…. But right now its Slowpoke.. YES!!

In our travels playing we find all ages playing the game even after all the hype is over. From a mom with her 5 year old walking around the park to an elderly man in his 70’s. If your a “gamer” or a home body like me you can get out and about and have some family time.

I leave my game on while I shop and catch all I can. That is the only way to level up around here. Plus, it adds KM to our eggs and buddy. I also leave my game on while doing the laundry, feeding chickens, bringing in wood for the fire. I can add about 1/2 a KM a day doing these chores around the house and property. Every step you take every move you make it will be watching you………. OK OK not watching you but it does help add KM..

So if you think a bit you get to have fun and level up in the game.. Have a large city near you plan a trip to the park there and have a picnic, to cold out go to the mall and walk there. Grab the kids, the parents, and don’t forget the dog and have some fun.

Do you play? How do you like to play the game?  Leave a comment and share!

Glad your here!

Reading Wednesday! Nora Roberts Key Trilogy!

One of my all time favorite past times is reading. I love light reading such as romances with a bit of mystical mystery thrown in for good measure. I am starting a new blog series called Reading Wednesday where I will review books I actually read and I think you will enjoy. Most of these books are not new releases. They are books I like to keep and read often.

Nora Roberts is one of my favorite authors. My favorite writings of hers are her famed trilogies. Unlike most romance novelist Nora Roberts adds other elements to tell the story. That in my opinion, makes her unique and refreshing even though she has been writing for over 25 years.

Disclaimer: There may be some spoilers but I do my best to share this book with you without sharing too much..

Key Trilogy:

Overview of the books:

Three strong smart women are invited to Warriors Peak a castle like home in the hills of Pleasant Valley. They meet Rowena and Pitt. They are the magic of this story. They tell a story of three demi-goddess that are captured by a nasty god wanting to control the god world. Their teacher and protector are Rowena and Pitt and because they were unable to save the girls they have been banished to our world till they find three women to find  three keys and unlock the box of souls to release them. Rowena and Pitt can do little to help Mallory, Dana, and Zoe but they do their best to protect them so they can search for the keys. Each woman has 1 moon cycle to find their key.

Key of Light synopsis:

The first book in this series is called Key of Light. Mallory a curator of an art gallery in the valley must find her key through her love of art. She meets Flynn who is a handsome news paper man and who is the step brother of Dana. Through this he gets involved and helps the women in their quests. But as with every romance story he is captivated by Mallory.

In Flynn Mallory finds what she has always wanted and while she is searching for her key she is trying to convince Flynn she is what he has always wanted.

Key of Knowledge synopsis:

The second book in the series is Key of Knowledge. Dana is a librarian who loves books and is facing her hours cut at the local library. Her quest is to find her key in books and yes knowledge. She had a lover in her youth who through circumstances comes back to the valley to help the women in the quest for the keys.

Jordan was Flynn’s best friend and Dana was heart-broken when Jordan left to become an author. Jordan wants to win Dana back and keeps her guessing as he courts her again.

Key of Valor synopsis:

The last book in the series Zoe is a hair stylist at a local salon and has been fired. Zoe needs to open up and have courage to find her key. Zoe had a hard life growing up but she came out of it with a precious son named Simon. As a single Mom he is the reason for everything. She meets Brad a building supply store tycoon but Brad has a painting of her and fell instantly in love but when he finally meets her he falls deeper and wants to win Zoe and her son. Zoe must learn to trust again and accept or she wont find her key.

My humble opinion:

What ties these books together and what makes them unique as a series. Well as always you have strong women meeting the men of their dreams and desires but you also see how connected the women are though the series. Having met at the Peak and going through their separate trials to find the keys to let the souls of the demi-goddess out they become best friends.  They learn to trust each other and the men helping them. Each woman was strong and smart but they become better by banding together.

Of course, the good battle evil and win, but they win together.  They form a family of 6 and because of that they have the keys to unlock the lock. What mere mortals can do with a little help from the gods.

I hope you enjoyed this review and keep coming back to see what I do next on this blog. Please follow and share with your friends and family.

Glad your here…
